Job Purpose

The Student Retention and Career Coach, under general supervision, plans, develops, and implements career coaching retention programs and services for new and existing students; coordinates the College's academic early-alert program; manages ADVISE CRM retention software system; and provides case management support to targeted groups of students. The position also provides academic guidance and advising for prospective, newly enrolled, and continuing postsecondary adult learners whose academic goals include obtaining traditional academic or technical education, transfer education, or continuing education for personal and professional growth.

The Student Success Center is a department within the Division of Student Affairs and Enrollment Management (SAEM). Reporting to the Assistant Director of Student Success and Retention, the Student Retention Coach ensures the high-quality execution and administration of customer service, business processes, and project management with colleagues across the College to support KCKCC's mission and strategic priorities related to enrollment management, student success, and fostering a diverse and inclusive environment for all students.

Position Description

  • Provide comprehensive academic career and retention services for KCKCC students with a high level of customer service that support student completion for, but is not limited to, underrepresented populations, adult/non-traditional learners, first-generation, and academic probation/dismissal students.
  • Advising duties include, but are not limited to course selection and enrollment, scheduling, explaining course descriptions, assisting with decision-making and goal-setting, processing degree and certificate checks at graduation, explaining curriculum changes, interpreting and evaluating high school and college transcripts, assisting with transfer planning, supporting students with selecting a major based on personal and academic strengths, understanding and analyzing degree audits, evaluating and interpreting placement test scores, etc.
  • Plan, develop, and implement programs and initiatives to advance student retention, career coaching; administer and participate in developing and evaluating projects, work processes, and systems that support student completion of strategic priorities and goals for the College.
  • Coordinate the early alert case management program and reporting system, including academic early-alert notifications, gathers additional information, triage cases, and make appropriate referrals.
  • Coordinate communication among departments in response to students in crisis or requiring academic intervention; reaches out to assigned students, explain program and student rights and responsibilities; refer assigned students to campus programs and departments.
  • Develop and oversee the delivery of student success and retention workshops; meet individually with workshop participants to evaluate individual needs and refer them to on- and off-campus services and resources; assist students in developing action plans for personal success; track and follows up with students to evaluate workshop and program effectiveness; work with Student Success Center colleagues and others across the College to update workshop content and identify program improvements.
  • Provide outreach to students on academic probation and at risk of losing or no longer eligible for financial aid programs; meet with students to connect them with campus support services and resources; act as a liaison with other departments across the College.
  • Under the direction of the Assistant Director for Guided Pathways Advising, coordinate the day-to-day functionality of the Ellucian ADVISE CRM platform and similar systems, including developing and monitoring student success scoring plans and retention communication plans.
  • Coordinate and serve on campus workgroups and committees to strengthen partnerships across the campus, broaden advising knowledge, and contribute to the campus community.
  • Provide graduation plans and academic advising for students placed on academic probation, financial aid warning, and exclusion of financial assistance.
  • Collect and analyze advising-related data on student retention and goal completion, preparing periodic reports as requested.
  • Maintain confidentiality in all matters about students and to the Student Success Center; FERPA & Title IX compliance.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Director of Student Success and Retention and Vice President for Student Affairs and Enrollment Management aligned with College and SAEM strategic priorities and goals.
Position Qualifications and/or Education

Minimum Qualifications and/or Education

  • A minimum of two (2) years of experience working in academic advising or case management, or a related field.
  • Master's degree or higher in education, psychology, business, or related field.
Preferred Qualifications and/or Education

  • Demonstrated record of experience with Ellucian student information systems.
  • Experience within a higher education institution working with a student population with a highly diverse, first-generation, and financially fragile population.
  • Multi-lingual writing and speaking proficiency.
  • Experience with academic advising retention initiatives and early intervention processes.
  • Experience in strategic planning and/or program assessment.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of CAS standards and NACADA Core Values for academic advising.

Work Schedule

Assigned 35-hour work week during Monday – Friday 8:00 A.M. - 6:00 P.M. Must be able to work a variable schedule/hour to meet operational needs. May require evening and weekend hours.
